Diane von Furstenberg: Fall to Spring
by Kristen Coulson on October 16th, 2009

dvf-fall-spring-Post

Intrigued by some smart purchase research from the 3.1 Phillip Lim runway…I decided to take a look at some of our other fashion favorites…. Diane von Fursenberg’s spring runway was a complete continuation of her fall “Nomad” theme.
Again we see a sense of adventure in the rich colors, mixed prints and layers.  Most notably the carry overs include:

  • Leopard print
  • Bold layers of complimenting print on print
  • Tribal elements in fabric and jewelry
  • Belts over outerwear

Start working these elements into your fall wardrobe and keep them around for spring.

3.1 Phillip Lim from Fall to Spring
by Kristen Coulson on October 15th, 2009

Lim-fall-spring-post

As much as fashions and trends change by the moment it’s nice to see a designer carry some elements from season to season.
Key pieces that saw a repeat runway performance for 3.1 Phillip Lim are sequins, the pant suit, and full skirts. The colors grey and rust made an encore as well.

Olivia Palermo: Vested Interest
by Kristen Coulson on October 13th, 2009

Olivia_Polmero_Vest_PostLove her or hate her Olivia Palermo is undeniably fashionable. Take some style cues from this socialite when it comes to making a menswear vest feminine and chic.

Exposing her pseudo-real live/job on the The City for 12K an episode keeps her in serious style but it’s the way she pairs it all together that is genuinely impressive.

Among her strong suits are paring the expected with the unexpected, this is what keeps her look thrown together and effortless.

NEON INDIAN – Psychic Chasms
by Ryan Strong on October 13th, 2009

3508590806_2785ca6fd5There really isn’t an official name for the style of music that is currently emerging out of bands like Neon Indian or recently reviewed Washed Out. It’s basically music that is synth-based, 80’s sentiment, psychedelic in nature and produced out of a basement studio.

One stand out is Deadbeat Summer that is super catchy with oohs and ahhs, synths lines and a laid back beat. As with most of these new dream-pop albums there is always a coming-of-age theme to them – wether or not the lyrics speak that, its the general feel I get from the album. Songs like 6669 has the back and forth kick snare beat that keeps the head moving side to side, Mind, Drips opens up with a space ship taking off that reminds me of some old Nintendo game and has a nice back beat groove. The album is short, only about 30 mins, but there is so many good songs that the album is sure not to disappoint any 80’s sentimental geek.

Buyer’s Pick of the Week: Marc by Marc Jacobs Plaid Coat
by Lindsay Burt on October 12th, 2009

IMG_9562The weather has definitely turned chilly and it’s time to start investing in outerwear! My pick for this week is one of my favorite coats for the season. It’s the Marc by Marc Jacobs Parker Plaid Coat and it’s unique coloring and novelty plaid design will keep you cozy and chic this fall and winter. This coat really has the best of both form and function. The a-line shape is right on point with this fall’s forward. over-sized silhouettes and the coat itself is super chunky and warm, so it will hold up to the harshest weather!

Buyer’s Pick of the Week: Haute Hippie Furry Vestigan
by Lindsay Burt on October 8th, 2009

BuyersPickFur

One of the biggest trends that emerged this fall was fur, and my favorite piece this week incorporates this trend with out offending Peta. It is the Haute Hippie Furry Vestigan and it is amazing! It’s hand made and the furry affect is created by many superfine alpaca yarns. Worn over tees and paired with denim, it will keep you cozy and make a statement!

Fall Trend: Casual Grunge
by Kristen Coulson on October 6th, 2009

Casual_Grunge_Post

The 90’s consisted of flannel, Doc Martens, and Nirvana. We can understand why anyone would want to forget those looks forever, but the grunge look pieces that are showing up in stores do not remind us of Courtney Love. Grunge has undergone a transformation from clothes for rebellious teens to trendy adults with its new tailored ripped jeans, slimmer plaid shirts and sleeker boots. This look now channels a fun, edgy look with no resemblances to Soul Asylum.

The Informant! with Matt Damon
by Ryan Strong on October 5th, 2009

the-informantAmongst all the prequels, sequels and rehashed movies I am always on the look out for an original film. Something that hasn’t been done before, unpredictable. I’ve found that in The Informant!. Matt Damon is chunky and has a toupee and mustache and gives an outstanding performance.

I found myself almost to tears laughing so hard at certain scenes. It has an ‘adult humor’ to it, not like f-bombs, sex and drugs, but like The Office – some what dry and situational. There are so many “Michael Scott moments” where the situation is either so awkward or ridiculous you just have to laugh because its the only thing you can do for the poor guy. Some of the funniest moments are when you can hear Damon’s stream of consciousness as a voice-over.
