Everyone’s got to have a “little black dress” in their closet. For most women it is a wardrobe must, a staple, a “go-to” dress that works for all occasions. My pick for this week is not just a weekly favorite item; I’m taking it one step further and naming my favorite “LBD” for the fall season. It is the “Freda Dress” by Twenty8Tweleve and it is truly the ultimate black dress in my book. The one shoulder design keeps with the current trend, but still offers a timeless silhouette. It has subtle details on the back, is slimming to the waist and offers camouflage to the hips with the shape of the skirt. Worn by itself, it’s an edgy, chic dress, but paired with a blazer this dress can go to the most conservative events. I love dresses like this–versatile enough to work with pieces in your closet, but makes enough of a statement to stand alone.

There’s a little bit of abrasiveness when listening to Embryonic, The Flaming Lips’ latest album. You sort of get that feeling while staring at the album cover of a girl that appears to be drowned by a hand in her own hair. It’s raw and alive. There is a comfort though with the album’s repetitious drum beats, bass lines and rhythm guitars – this is evident in “Convinced Of The Hex” and “The Sparrow Looks Up At The Machine”.
“Evil” has a nostalgic feeling to it, with brassy 80’s synths and Wayne Coyne’s “I wish I could go back / Back in time” lyric sang back and forth. It’s accompanied with your beloved string arrangements that are reminiscent to The Soft Bulletin. Embryonic is a familiar departure from their recent albums and harkens back to Zaireeka. The electric piano is prominent in most of the tracks with it’s 60s/70s psych rock feel, along with other random spurts of guitar outrages, falling and crashing drums and back and forth bass lines you really feel like you are listening to a band playing live.

Trina Turk – Le Metro Jumper
If you were into the romper trend this past spring you’ll be happy to know that “jumpers” are chic new look to wear this fall/holiday season.
I love this Trina Turk “Le Metro Jumper” because it’s so versatile and flattering. It’s simple, black, and sophisticated with pants that flow to the ground elongating your body. It looks amazing with a novelty belt or statement necklace, and it’s a great alternative to the typical cocktail dress for holiday parties this season.

The whole Standard Style crew is flipping out over this dress! The perfect little frock for all those holiday parties with tights and blazers but this dress will easily transition into fall with edgy gladiator heels or ballet flats. Add a belt and an arm full of bangles to mix it up as you’re sure to wear it again and again.

While runways and stores are packed with sequins, fur, and metallic at the moment, one embellishment that needs to be brought in the light is feathers. Designers are using this of-the-moment trend in a range of pieces from purses to skirts and dresses to hair accessories. Rid your mind of images of looking possibly like Big Bird or a feathered Vegas show girl and don’t be afraid to explore this current trend. Take a note from the Olsen twins’ line Elizabeth and James and work the trend boldly with their gorgeous, yet daring, mini feather skirt. Or for the perfect holiday cocktail dress look to the subtly feather-embellished dress by DVF, as worn by Olivia Palermo. However, if you’re just looking to accentuate any outfit, turn to the feather headbands and hair accessories for an instant on-trend update. So take flight with the item many trendsetters are coveting right now and elevate your basic wardrobe with hints of feathers.

Once thought of as the tacky material used for 80’s prom dresses, sequins are making a comeback into every fashionable woman’s closet this season. Luckily these eye-catching pieces don’t have to be saved for special occasions and can be worn anytime- day or night. To make sure you do not end up looking like you’re walking to your next costume party, it’s extremely crucial to use smart styling when rocking this look. This season’s designers are incorporating sequins into literally every piece- blazers, sweaters, dresses, tops, and skirts. One option that stands out to me is the glistening mini skirt, a la Haute Hippie and DVF. Pair with… Continue Reading…
My pick for this week is not just a beautiful coat, but an investment piece and it will be paying you back for years to come. It’s the “Runway Ruffle Coat” by Rebecca Taylor and although it looks great on a runway–this coat belongs in your wardrobe. The leopard print of the coat keeps it fun and novelty, while the style and silhouette is classically chic and flattering for all body types. Investing in this timeless coat will be a smart choice now, and for many years later.

Nails are becoming quite the statement these days. We’ve come across a fashion forward company that is beautiful inside and out. The Butter London brand exudes British elegance with a hint of rock and roll.
Nonie Creme, creative director, is a sought after, high-fashion session manicurist. Nonie’s work for clients such as Kate Moss, Vogue, H&M, Jimmy Choo, and Lancome, have led her to be recognized as London’s leading manicurist. She now turns her hand to training, product design, and development for butter LONDON, bringing stunning, non-toxic nail care to the market.

Speaking of Art Garfunkel visiting the Kansas City Symphony, Kings of Convenience released a new album. Perfected production of recorded acoustic and vocal Kings of Convenience release their follow up to Riot on Empty Street, which sold over 400,000 in Europe, with the beautiful and hushed Declaration of Dependance.
I don’t think I’ve heard matched harmonies like Erlend Øye and Eirik Glambek Bøe since Simon and Garfunkel. If you are unfamiliar with the Kings they are like an indie Bossa nova band. Sounds boring? No its not, its beautiful music. While Riot on Empty Street had I’d Rather Dance With You (click to watch the video, its quite comical in a Napoleon Dynamite way), a perfectly fine song for a house dance party, Declaration of Dependance loses the drums and is a bit quieter, yes it’s possible. Go out and buy the album, its the best in its genre this year.
Listen to their single Mrs. Cold…

Remember The Graduate and it’s amazing soundtrack by Simon and Garfunkel – you know… “coo coo ca-choo Mrs. Robison”? Well Art Garfunkel is teaming up with the Kansas City Symphony to play music from the soundtrack as well as other timeless songs by Garfunkel. Don’t miss out!

Now that the weather has officially turned cold, it is time to start rocking the layered looks for fall. My favorite trend this fall is layering tights under those denim shorts you wore all summer. However, if you don’t have a great pair of denim shorts already, then pick up the “Boyfriend Short” by Ever. It has a rolled hem and slouchy fit that looks really cute on and it’s great back to tights. You can pair it with a plaid shirt and boots for a casual day outfit, a t-shirt and blazer for a more polished feel or even a flowy blouse with a great pair of heels for a more feminine look.
Either way, tights paired back to your denim shorts will give your look an edge and still keep you warm in the months to come!
