Emmys Red Carpet 2010

The 62nd Annual Primetime Emmys aired Sunday night with hits and misses spotted on the red carpet, and this year the opinions were all over the board. I picked my top five while watching the pre-show, but even the most credible fashion critics didn’t agree with some of my choices. Everyone one has their opinion but I applaud those who aren’t afraid to take a risk and pull it off, while some of my picks where a little forward I think my top five did an excellent job of polishing off an entire look without being over the top. My most controversial pick was January Jones in her cerulean structured Versace number, I thought the color was great the detail was beautiful and her hair and make-up where simple and clean, the perfect match to such a unique dress. Navy was the color of the night and both Lea Michele and Jane Krakowski looked stunning. Anna Paquin’s Alexander McQueen dress was another that received mixed reviews, I thought the hemline was perfect (also seen on January’s dress) and the intricate gold detail was just enough to stand out against the simple black shape of the gown. Last Jennifer Carpenter’s Oday Shakar sequin gown was beautifully draped and fit her like a glove, the sleek hair and smokey eye really set her apart from the other sequin looks we saw on the carpet.

Faux Luxury

Faux fur vests are oh so chic and can instantly add a sense of luxury to any outfit. She & Him Perform at Uptown

She & Him, a musical collaboration between the massively talented M. Ward and the ethereal and equally talented Zooey Deschanel, performed last night at the Uptown Theater. Zooey, better known for her roles in Almost Famous, Elf, and 500 Days of Summer, captivated the crowd with her sweet yet sultry voice and oh-so-stunning good looks. She wore a precious, sparkly, baby blue dress that made it impossible to keep your eyes off her and bounced around with infectious energy while shaking a tambourine. They performed songs from their latest album, Volume Two, as well as M. Ward’s latest album, Hold Time, on which Zooey also collaborated. During their cover of “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” and “Fools Rush In,” Zooey entertained the crowd by playing the ukulele.

While Zooey Deschanel’s musical ability is unequivocal, she has a great sense of personal style that defies the latest trends, and that’s why we love her! In a recent interview with ALIVE, a St. Louis lifestyle blog, Zooey discusses her indifference to the fashion gods:

I am not a fashion person; I don’t really care what’s in style. I want to wear clothes that express who I am and that are flattering. I think people might respond to the fact that I don’t really care what the fashion world thinks of me; I am happy if I am able to inspire people to express themselves. But I don’t kowtow to the fashion industry.

Zooey’s look exudes confidence and sex appeal without being too revealing. Her style choices are flirty and romantic and often have a vintage vibe. Although, she might not consider herself as part of the fashion influx, she has been labeled an “It” girl by Nylon Magazine and secured herself a contract with Rimmel London, which has featured the likes of Kate Moss and Lily Cole. No matter her disassociation with the fashion world, it’s clear that her definitive look and sense of self makes her a true fashion icon.

To get Zooey’s look, opt for more conservative frocks with fun, flirty details such as ruffles and bows. Pair the look with opaque tights.

Fall Florals

Another great transitional look for the time between summer and fall is to incorporate darker floral prints into your wardrobe. Floral patterns using more muted colors such as mustard, plum, and olive are great alternatives to the brighter colors of summer. The color palette indicates fall while the floral pattern implies summer, the combination of which is perfect for the in-between months! Try pairing a darker floral skirt with a denim or army jacket or style a floral dress with a distressed leather belt. For shoes, stick to some must-have lace up boots or some cute booties for the perfect touch!

I would consider myself pretty versatile when it comes to style, not really sticking to one genre or trend. But this girl blows me out of the water, photographed by Vanessa Jackman this foreign fashion student really knows how to mix up a wardrobe. I love how well she combines prints and think it’s a very fashion forward yet wearable look for fall, leopard is blowing up right now so invest in a good print and pair it will a more subtle piece. Belts go unrecognized too often but by adding one it can really polish off an outfit effortlessly and flatter your figure, my favorites this fall include military inspirations and rich colored leather. Since the fall weather is not quite here show off those legs while you can, try layering you mini’s with cardigans and blazers instead of resorting to jeans when the weather cools off.

My pick for this week is more than just one piece, but a whole look. School is now in session and I’m loving this classic, prep school inspired look by Haute Hippie. They really did a great job of pairing preppy oxford shirts back to embellished minis for a cool contrast of conservative polish with edgy glam.
