Friday night marked the launch of Matt Baldwin’s men’s line for the Baldwin Collection, an extension of the Baldwin Denim Line started in 2009. The event featured male models sporting the new line, music by DJ Mike Scott, and a shopping area where partygoers could try on and purchase Baldwin jeans. Boulevard Brewing Co. and Edwin Blue sponsored the event. The Baldwin Collection will be available at Standard Style boutique in the coming months. The Baldwin line is now selling in selected boutiques in San Francisco, Chicago, Houston, Austin, Rhode Island, as well as The Standard Style Boutique in Kansas City and Leawood.

A little over a year ago Johan and Francis Rizzudo, members of Black Box Revue, a popular friday night indie dance party in Springfield, Missouri started a weeknight side-project with the help of newcomer DJ DINNER called MakeOut! With it’s combination of crazy party-themes, custom handpainted photobooths, super cheap drink specials, and awesome indie dance trax with a peppering classic 80′s and 90′s made MakeOut an instant success. After a year and subsequent move by DJ DINNER up to Kansas City, MakeOut has decided to spread it’s wings.

This wednesday night Johan and DINNER are happy to bring you MakeOut KC! at the Riot Room starting at 10pm. So put on those dancin’ shoes and get ready to MakeOut!

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros came together two years ago when brainchild and frontman, Alex Ebert met Jade Castrinos in the land of California. Ebert, reacting to a vivid vision and dream sequence, set the Edward Sharpe persona into motion in the form of a folkloric tale…

Birthed by Mouth in the year two-thousand and five, young Edward Sharpe had to wait nearly two years before he was to grow his arms and legs and fingers and toes.
Immaculately conceived, his father (a Robot who had magically become a real boy…but that’s another story) declared his undying devotion to the creature. He perched the fleshy bust upon a teetering pedestal fashioned from stacked cereal boxes and positioned the display at his window for all the town to see. Young Edward soon proved no ordinary boy.
Though his father had figured him deaf for his unresponsiveness to sounds, he in fact had the universally unique condition of being deaf from hearing too much or, more correctly put, too well. In plain words, he heard EVERYTHING AT ONCE.
At first it proved rather painful like a wretched whining winding all hours, but very soon those who whisper visited young Edward and revealed to him the Tricks and Truths, the Ways and Plays, the Chords and Dischords of the Universe.
He did not need to eat but the color of the sun, which was F#, and moved his bones to grow.
His arms and legs and fingers and toes grew ’til the tower of boxes collapsed and he laughed. He moved thru the door which was C over B# and ran thru the village hearing ALL of its music! The workers and children and painters of buildings and dogs barking madly and trees bristling softly and OH!!
Young Edward could not resist!  He began playing the tree which are the chords E and D ‘gainst the mice in the grass which are A played with brass and the wooden fence F and then C and repeat with a drone of B Minor to bring in the street and the Birds B to B Sharp with fluttering strings and the sky mostly C unless he wants to bring in the rain and for rain bring the F Chord bombastic with organ’s distortion and symbols a’crashin!
Yes, and a music was born.

I recently had the privilege of meeting with Alex Ebert to speak about Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros after their performance at the Sasquatch Music Festival in Quincy, Washington. We spoke briefly about the origin of the band, their tour, and the debut album, Up From Below, but what was most surprising was the detour that our conversation took as we quickly ascended into a group therapy session, where spirituality was discussed openly and psychological torments of the past and present were laid out nakedly on the table.
Referred to by some as the “Hippie Messiah,” Alex Ebert certainly appeared to fit the bill, sporting a linen tunic and a full mane of tousled, brown hair. He sat oddly at peace with a complete stranger and proposed that everyone needs to find a Messiah within themselves on a daily basis. He doesn’t want people to worship him, and laughs at the hilarity of the matter.

Ebert, the product of an aggressive new-age therapist father, has been at war with his self-doubt, addiction, and wildly active ego to find himself at a place where is he is okay with being happy. Up From Below reflects Ebert’s rollercoaster of emotions gained from past experience and present challenges. In an age where people are quick to shy away from pain and feelings, Ebert proclaims, “It’s time to let the bats out.”

I left the interview with my head spinning. Unsure if I was in shock from the divine intervention or simply in a state of euphoria, the only thing I was certain of was that Edward Sharpe, real or not, is infectious.

The 10-piece hippie funfest will be invading Kansas City tonight, June 16, 2010 at the Beaumont Club in Westport. Prepare to be made into a believer.
