Faces of Corinthian Hall
Some of the greatest buildings in the world are adorned with the mythological likenesses of Zeus, Poseidon and Aphrodite. Kansas City Museum’s Corinthian Hall can be added to that list with its beautiful decorated exterior adorned with these same mythological figures. At Kansas City Museum’s First Sunday Family Fun Day, from 12 p.m.-4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 7, adults and children can learn about Greek mythology. Visitors can design their own gargoyle mask; make a picture featuring one of the heroes of Greek mythology and play matching games and win prizes. Storyteller Steve Otto will be in the StoryTarium telling mythological stories.

Exhibit in Print: Faces of Corinthian Hall
Corinthian Hall is the largest and most robust example of Ecole des Beaux Arts architecture, which incorporates decorative elements including representations of the human figure, in our region. Found in the capitals of columns, tucked into mantles and peeking down from ceilings, elements of human and animal faces can be found represented in many materials across the estate.

On February 21 we will release our latest “exhibit in print” documenting the many “faces of Corinthian Hall.”

Historic preservation consultant Elizabeth Rosin presents a detailed inventory and narrative description of these remarkable decorative elements. The publication will join the “Restoration of a Window” publication produced last year and continues the process of documenting the building’s preservation.
