Style And The City: Five Women Cruise The City In Style
by Emily Baldwin on March 23rd, 2009 in Lifestyle

We are five women devoted to bringing you the latest on hip restaurants, hot spots, and fashion advice. Style and the City (SATC) will bring our ideas of how to do style while out on the town in Kansas City. We will tell you what you need to know and where you need to be and most importantly: what to wear.
Emily Baldwin: Fashion Buyer and Boutique Owner
Michelle Jolles: Publishing Executive
Stephanie O’Dear: Marketing Executive and Columnist
Jenny Kincaid: Public Relations
Kristen Addington: Event Coordinator
STANDARD STYLE BOUTIQUE: 451 West 47th Street on the Country Club Plaza
We started off Saturday at Standard Style Boutique to wardrobe the evening, and all were excited to get into the new spring trends and celebrate the warming weather.
- The Trends: A noted trend for the transitional time of year was the fitted blazer for layering. Over denim, over dresses, this trend will take you anywhere.
- The Choices: The latest names in fashion such as McQ by Alexander McQueen, Shipley and Halmos, and Alexander Wang. A few basics too, such as Theory and Marc by Marc Jacobs.
- The Style: Each of us decided to step it up a notch for the evening. Even the denim was dressed up and styled for a night on the town.
REVERSE: You can’t beat the location on the southwest corner of the Plaza, 616 Ward Parkway.
- The Vibe: The ambiance was urban and the décor is on point. On nice evenings, the wall of windows creates an open air dining experience.
- The details: We received a top notch experience. Jeff, the head bartender, was accommodating, friendly, and knowledgeable.
- What to drink: We had a variety of signature cocktails to taste, and we agree with their top sellers as the ones to go with: the “flirtini” and the “mojito” were our favorites.
- What to order: The “small plates” are great for sharing! The top three favorites to definitely try were the calamari, the brie, and the pizza.
- The Verdict: We highly recommend ReVerse as an early evening starting point on any night, a great place for conversation, an excellent menu, wonderful service, and you’re sure to run into a familiar face.
LEADER LIMO: As we stepped out of ReVerse, it was a comforting sight to see a limo from Leader Limo waiting outside. When do you ever not have to deal with parking in Kansas City? What a perfect way to travel on a girls night out. The Style and the City group felt it was a great way to get around the city when in a group, not having to worry about getthing cabs or driving home. Bruce Heinrich started Leader Limo and has raised the bar on travel. His employees are at a beckon cell phone call away and extra friendly. Reggie, our driver, became a friend throughout the evening and made sure we were taken care of. He drove us from the Plaza down to Southwest Boulevard to hit La Bodega (sister restaurant to ReVerse)
LA BODEGA: 703 Southwest Blvd Kansas City, MO 64108 in the very popular Crossroads District.
- The Vibe: When we walked in on Saturday at 8:30, it was packed! It was great to sense the energy of all the people having an enjoyable evening in this Spanish inspired restaurant.
- The Details: La Bodega is a tapas restaurant which allows you to taste many items and get your fill of excellent food. Excellent service, and TJ the manager is extremely professional and friendly.
- What to drink: Their signature sangria, you can choose from red or white. The signature after dinner drink, Spanish Coffee, is created tableside in a flaming glass, entertaining all the tables around you!
- What to order: Favorites were the tenderloin, and the dip called “Alubias Blancos con Pimiento”. Our only advice is make sure to use the Listerine in the bathroom after tasting the garlic green beans with potatoes….it definitely raised our eyebrows.
- The Verdict: This is an off-the-beaten-path favorite! If you haven’t been to La Bodega, you must go. Plus, it’s locally owned. Try to get a reservation at the beloved spot because it tends to always be busy.
INDIE: Located next to the Midland right outside the Power and Light District. 1228 Main St, Kansas City, MO 64105
- The Vibe: Impressive build out, and great mood lighting. The music could have been louder and would have upped the energy. We doubled the number of patrons upon entering but learned that it’s a hot spot pre- and post-Midland shows.
- The Details: The honeycomb shelves behind the bar are echoed in the shape of the bar and windows. We think this place has huge potential.
- What to drink: With varied selection of flavored Vodkas, the cocktails are as unique as your imagination. Can’t decide? Have John, the bartender, make you one of his specialty cocktails.
- The Verdict: After finding fliers on the tables promoting “Sundays at Indie,” which has live music by DJ’s and drink specials, we definitely will be back to try out a Sunday night.
MOSAIC: The Power and Light Hotspot
- The Vibe: The spot was packed with energetic club goers. The clientele was a mix of locals and quite a few tourists.
- The Details: Angela, who heads up reservations, was accommodating, and we can clearly see why she is the VIP hostess. The music was a great mix of pop, eighties and dance, and it kept the energy level high. The wait staff is great here, and we love Brian, who manages this one year old club. Our favorite part of Mosaic is the incredible outdoor patio, which has a fire pit and great seating. The view is spectacular and gives you the sense of what the city is all about with the Block building right there. We can’t wait until it gets a little bit warmer because this is the spot!
- What to drink: Bottle service is the only way to go. It’s worth it just to have a table for the entertainment of people watching.
- The Verdict: We had a great time here, but after enough drunk club guys hitting on us (one actually falling over our table…whoa) we were ready to call it a night.
Reggie picked us up, and we all had smiles and were excited to share our recommendations after our first Style and the City. Kansas City has a city scene, and we are glad that if you love style, you can find the spots to share!
